Compliance software for dangerous goods transport by sea

Exis Technologies launches Dutch version of IMDG Code e-learning course in partnership with New Learning Factory, 24 October 2011

Nlf -e -learningExis Technologies and New Learning Factory have launched a Dutch version of IMDG Code e-learning (Amendment 35-10), a computer-based training tool for shore side staff handling and transporting dangerous goods to be shipped by sea. "Basiscursus", or "Basic Course" provides a general awareness of all facets of the IMDG Code provisions. The Dutch version follows the launch of the English course in The Netherlands in 2009 in partnership with New Learning Factory.

Accidents happening thousands of kilometres at sea involving dangerous goods often start a few kilometres ashore. This is often due to a lack of proper training amongst shore side staff involved in the sea transport chain. The International Maritime Organization made IMDG Code training mandatory for shore side staff from January 2010 as a step towards addressing this continuing problem. IMDG Code training is now a requirement for shippers and forwarders, container packers and consolidators, shipping line booking staff, stevedores, port and terminal operators. IMDG Code e-learning was developed with the support of the International Maritime Organization and industry bodies to address the urgent need to train large numbers of staff worldwide economically and flexibly, but to a high standard.

The Dutch course is available on the web or as SCORM packages for integration into a company's own Learning Management System (LMS). NLF is also offering an English version of Function Specific training. Both the Basic Course and Function Specific course can be followed up with classroom based training either in Dutch or English for a blended learning approach. Blended learning qualifies for a training subsidy fund of up to 75% from the European Training and Industry Grant in cooperation with EasyCursus.nl.

Although to date IMDG Code shore side training has not been enforced in The Netherlands, the Inspectie Verkeer en Waterstaat recently commented that penalties would be imposed from 2012 if companies fail to provide sufficient training for their staff.

Arnold Einhaus, General Manager, New Learning Factory, commented: "We are delighted to have a Dutch version of the course to sell into our market. I think that the translated course, combined with the subsidy and classroom based teaching will offer companies an ideal way to meet the training requirements.

IMDG Code e-learning is sponsored by the TT Club and supported by ICHCA (International Cargo Handling Association). The course is independently certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), one of the world's leading classification societies.
